The Ballad of Walter The Wonder Dog

Well I took this week off work to get stuff ready for the school year. For all of the 10 years that I’ve worked and had kiddos in school, I’ve taken time off before the first of school crazies for all the usual stuff: back to school shopping, school paperwork, haircuts, yadda yadda yadda.

But I didn’t get as much done as I wanted.

Because of one word. Well, five if you use his formal name.

Prince Walter The Wonder Dog

It’s a great story, actually, and I’m still a little stunned that we have a third dog, but sometimes things just happen and you almost feel like you have no control but in a good way. Walter was a stray, 4 month old puppy found near Garland, TX at an apartment complex. He’d been wondering alone for at least days (maybe weeks) based on the condition of dirt and mattes and how hungry he was.

She took him to her local vet (who happens to be our vet) who posted the pic on their FB page (don’t worry, I have asked them to please stop doing this immediately but let this be a warning – don’t follow your vet on FB;).

The twins saw his picture and were immediately smitten. And it didn’t help that it was the day before their 15th birthday and they were BEGGING and also too, I am a sucker for the underdog (literally in this case).

Before we knew it, we had him home for a trial to be sure the other dogs would accept him, and well, that was 2 days and $150 in vet bills ago, so I guess he’s staying.

But we know Walter was meant to be here. And we know that we’re a mess – all 2 parents, 3 kids, and now 3 dogs of us. And everyone thinks I’m crazy, and why would I add one more thing, and did you really think this through? And the answer is, no. I didn’t.It’s amazing how a puppy, even a tiny 7 pound puppy, can take over your whole house. We now have de-worming medicine, and ear drops, and lots of kisses going on. We also have little sleep as he’s adjusting to his new night time routine.

Awwwww . . . .

Welcome home, Walter. We’re glad you’re here. May God help us all.But I think it’s gonna be OK anyway. Because we don’t have room. Really, we don’t. Not in our schedule or our budget, anyway. But sometimes you make room. In your hearts. And the other stuff just sort of works itself out. And in a time in our world where everything seems to be falling apart and there’s nothing I can do about it, God brought us a little puppy that we can bathe, and feed, and love, and give a home.
