Has it really been 2 weeks since my last blog post? Oh My Word, I’m so sorry. It’s been a little crazy here with lots of exciting personal stuff (that I can’t talk about just yet) and between that and my kids being home for summer and work and the heat . . . excuses, excuses. I know, right?

So I thought I’d do just a short post about where I am in my training for the Run Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon coming up in less than 4 months! (btw, if you want to read all my tips for running this amazing race, read this! This will be my 3rd time and I might be finally getting the hang of it! You can also put Wine and Dine half into the search engine over there to the right and it will show you all my posts about this great race. Warning: there are a lot of them;).

Us at last year’s Wine and Dine! Not sure what I’m doing with my leg.

As we know, this is my favorite Disney race. It’s my favorite course, it’s my favorite time of the year, and it’s the perfect weekend getaway before the craziness of the holidays. Scott and I CANNOT WAIT. He’s not running but is acting as my pit crew/sherpa/picture taker:).

I have to admit, I’m approaching my training a bit willy nilly. My goal is just to finish with a smile on my face, and aside from making sure my mileage is sufficient, I’m not planning any crazy speed work. After my great race in Irving in April and my PR by OVER 12 MINUTES (thank you very much;) I’m calling it good on the ambitious race goals for a bit. This race is, for me, one to be run for fun. The fact that we run at night and there’s wine and food after makes me want to enjoy every minute not be fighting to hold onto a pace.

With that in mind, here’s my detailed training plan. Hold onto your hats because it’s REALLY complicated.

Run 2 – 3 times during the week for between 30 and 45 minutes.

Run longer on the weekend starting at 5 miles (where I am now) and ending somewhere between 10 and 13 miles two weeks before the race.

The end.

If you’d like to purchase my training plan . . .just kidding. Keep in my mind, this is (I think) my 18th half marathon and my body and my mind are quite used to the drill. And I really think there’s something to be said for running a race for fun.

But running a race for fun doesn’t mean showing up without training. If you do that, the race won’t be fun and neither will before the race (when you’re anxious) or after the race (when you’re incredibly sore). Please don’t do that.

I hope you’re enjoying your running right now. It’s very, very hot here in Dallas and although they’ve been tolerable, my runs have not been exactly “fun”. I am very much looking forward to fall! But am still running with gratitude and joy!

Will I see you at the Wine and Dine Half? If so would love to say hello!! Have you ever run a race just for fun? Tell me how you trained!!

  1. I ran Disney Princess with not nearly as much training as I needed. However it was a ton on fun! Your training plan seems pretty manageable! One day it will do wine and dine, the thought of running at night terrifies me lol

  2. I am do woefully under-trained for Dumbo it’s both sad and scary. Most of my midweek runs are 1-2 miles. I just did my longest run did this training cycle yesterday at 12 miles. And no back-to-back running days. I’m going to walk most of the 10K and pray I survive the weekend!

    1. Randy – I truly think you’ll be fine. You are an experienced runner and you KNOW you can go the distance. Just take your time and listen to your body! And training looks a little different when you become a parent, yes?

  3. When I first read about W&D a year and a half ago, I had never run a mile in my life. I thought it sounded like the coolest race so I decided to become a runner and hope that one day I would get to run it. I am sooooo excited that my husband and I are both running it this year! November can’t get here fast enough! 🙂
